INEC chief praises Nigerians’ ‘enduring faith’ in democracy

The Acting Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), May Agbamuche-Mbu, has expressed strong optimism about the nation’s democratic future, citing the growing public enthusiasm for electoral activities as an endorsement of democratic governance.

Speaking at a quarterly consultative meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Abuja, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu stated that the impressive turnout for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise reflects Nigerians’ “enduring faith in the power of the ballot.”

“The Commission is impressed by the response of Nigerians to the CVR exercise, and for us, this is a testament that our citizens believe in democracy and in INEC’s efforts,” she said.

The CVR exercise, which began with online pre-registration in August 2025, is scheduled to run until August 2026, with weekly updates being published for transparency.

Looking Ahead to State Elections

The INEC chief provided updates on forthcoming elections, noting that preparations for the Anambra State Governorship Election, set for November 8, 2025, are “progressing steadily.” Ten out of thirteen key activities for that poll have already been completed, with non-sensitive materials delivered and voter education currently underway.

She also announced that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections will be held on February 21, 2026, across 68 constituencies.

Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu also paid tribute to her predecessor, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, describing him as a “visionary leader who left behind a legacy of innovation, institutional strength, and integrity.”

She concluded by assuring the civil society representatives that INEC remains committed to upholding transparency and protecting the sanctity of the vote.
