Abuja, Nigeria
Nigeria’s election body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has confirmed that preparations are nearly complete for the upcoming Anambra State Governorship Election. The vote, set for November 8, 2025, is one of the most significant off-cycle polls in Africa’s most populous nation. The announcement was made by the Acting INEC Chairman, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, at a quarterly meeting with political parties in Abuja. The commission according to her has successfully completed 10 out of 13 key electoral activities for the election and stressed its commitment to conducting a credible and transparent poll.
Focus on Anambra and FC
With the election just weeks away, political campaigns are intensifying in Anambra State, one of the South-Eastern states often viewed as a key political barometer.
Anambra State Governorship Election (8th November 2025):
The last day for campaigns is set for November 6. All non-sensitive materials have been delivered to the state, and the commission is working closely with security agencies to ensure a peaceful exercise.
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections (21st February 2026): The commission also provided an update on the local government elections for Nigeria’s capital, which will elect Chairmen and Councillors across the six Area Councils. Eight of the thirteen scheduled activities have been completed, with the submission of Polling Agents’ names and the publication of the final Register of Voters among the outstanding tasks.
Voter Registration ‘Testament’ to Democracy
Providing an update on civic participation, the Acting Chairman hailed the early success of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. The CVR officially resumed on August 18, 2025, for online pre-registration, followed by in-person registration on August 25, and is scheduled to run until August 30, 2026. “The Commission is impressed by the response of Nigerians to the CVR exercise and for us, this is a testament that Nigerians believe in our democracy…”— Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, Acting INEC Chairman.
The registration exercise allows eligible citizens to register for the first time, update their information, or transfer their voting locations. The commission is publishing weekly updates on the registration figures on its official website. The meeting also saw the recognition of the outgoing INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, for his “legacy of innovation, institutional strength and integrity” after his tenure concluded on October 7, 2025.
