Abuja, Nigeria — Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has publicly commended state governors who hail from the accounting profession, singling out Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, as an exemplary figure for his application of sound financial principles in governance.
The President offered his praise at the State House in Abuja on Monday, shortly after meeting a high-level delegation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).
President Tinubu applauded the accounting profession for its pivotal role in driving economic reforms, stressing that its members are indispensable in the nation’s pursuit of sustainable development.
“The accountancy profession represents transparency and information disclosure. A balance sheet must be definite, sure, and sustainable. I have confidence in the profession,” President Tinubu said.
He specifically highlighted several officials who are transitioning “theory into practice,” stating: “I’m proud of the many great minds working with us including the Governor of Kogi, the Governor of Jigawa, and the Accountant General of the Federation.”
The President noted that Governor Ododo, a Fellow of ICAN, has distinguished himself through prudent financial management and accountable governance in Kogi State, upholding the profession’s values of transparency and discipline.
The ICAN delegation, led by President Haruna Nma Yahaya, and IFAC President Mr. Jean Bouquot, visited the President to reaffirm their commitment to national development. President Tinubu expressed appreciation for ICAN’s partnership with international bodies and its contribution to fiscal and tax reforms, assuring the Institute that the Federal Government would consider its proposed amendment to its establishment Act.
The President concluded by urging ICAN to continue promoting high professional standards, emphasising that “accountability is the question, and transparency will be the answer to many problems.”
