Nigeria’s NITDA launches major ‘cyber hygiene’ campaign

As global reliance on digital platforms continues to grow, Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has launched a major push to tackle increasing cyber threats by stressing the need for individual responsibility.

NITDA is using Cybersecurity Awareness Month to remind the public that online security fundamentally begins with the user. The campaign, themed “Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Tomorrow,” emphasises that personal vigilance is crucial for safeguarding the broader digital community, including families and workplaces. This call to action was confirmed in a statement signed by Hadiza Umar, the Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations at NITDA.

The agency is urging all citizens to adopt a set of simple, effective practices to protect themselves. This includes using strong and unique passwords for every online account and enabling essential two-factor authentication (2FA) for added security.

Furthermore, users are advised to be highly vigilant against scams: avoiding suspicious links or attachments from unknown sources, consistently keeping devices and applications updated, and regularly backing up important data.

As Nigeria continues its push to build a secure and digitally resilient economy, NITDA calls for citizens to remain alert and exercise caution before sharing any personal or financial information online.
