Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Geoffrey Nnaji, has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet following a persistent controversy over his academic qualifications and allegations of certificate forgery.
Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga said the President accepted Mr. Nnaji’s resignation on Tuesday. Mr. Nnaji, who was appointed in August 2023, stated in his resignation letter that he had become the target of “blackmail by political opponents” attempting to damage his reputation.
The resignation follows a protracted public dispute regarding the authenticity of his academic records from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
The controversy intensified after a Federal High Court in Enugu recently ruled against Mr. Nnaji, rejecting his attempt to prevent the University of Nigeria from releasing his official academic details in response to a freedom of information request. That judicial decision had significantly increased public scrutiny on the minister’s qualifications.
