ABUJA, NIGERIA — Senior officials from the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the European Union (EU) have concluded their inaugural Trade and Investment Dialogue (TID) in Abuja, marking a formal effort to strengthen one of West Africa’s most significant economic partnerships.
The high-level meeting, held on September 30, 2025, was established to assess the robust economic relationship, address challenges, and identify new opportunities for growth and collaboration between the two entities.
The dialogue was co-anchored by Nura Rimi, Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI), and Ms. Dora Correia, Director of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Trade and Economic Security (DG TRADE).
Both Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investments, Jumoke Oduwole, and the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, welcomed the launch, noting that it highlights the growing strategic importance of trade and investment within the EU-Nigeria partnership.
Discussions spanned several critical areas, including cooperation on market access barriers, exploring preferential trade and investment arrangements, alignment on positions within the World Trade Organization (WTO), and reviewing regulatory measures that impact commerce. Officials also focused on identifying trade-related development cooperation areas.
Both sides affirmed their interest in continuing the forum. The second Senior Officials’ Trade and Investment Dialogue is scheduled to take place in Brussels, Belgium, in 2026.
