Nigerian Journalist Killed in Abuja Armed Robbery

Abuja, Nigeria

A popular Nigerian news anchor, reporter, and producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, has died following an armed robbery at her home in Abuja, her employer, ARISE News Channel, has announced.

Ms. Maduagwu, who was 29, “tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025,” the television station confirmed in a statement.

The incident is understood to have occurred at her residence in the Katampe area of the Nigerian capital. The Nigeria Police have launched an investigation into the fatal attack.

Known affectionately as “Sommie,” the journalist was described by the ARISE News Channel management as a “beloved colleague” and a “vibrant voice” who connected deeply with viewers. Beyond her work in broadcast journalism, Ms. Maduagwu was also a qualified lawyer.

“Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory,” the statement read.

The network called for a “speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”

The tragic death highlights ongoing concerns about personal security and armed crime in residential areas of Nigeria’s capital city.
