NNPC Calls for Greater African Collaboration on Energy Security

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bashir Ojulari, has called for stronger partnerships among African nations to achieve energy security across the continent.

Addressing the 7th African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO) National Oil Companies CEOs Forum, Mr. Ojulari stressed that with the decline of European investments in fossil fuel refineries, it is crucial for Africa to take control of its own energy future.

“Africa must take ownership of its resources and policies. Our policies should be designed by us,” Mr. Ojulari said. He added that with the continent’s “vast resource base and improved governance structures,” Africa can “secure its energy destiny.”

Strategic Projects and Security Milestones

Mr. Ojulari highlighted several strategic infrastructure projects currently underway, including the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline within Nigeria. He also provided an update on the ongoing Nigeria–Morocco Gas Pipeline Project, an expansion of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), which is designed to enhance regional energy integration and trade.

The NNPC boss also noted that Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone in security, with a 100% pipeline availability for the first time in two decades. This was achieved through strengthened collaboration with host communities and security agencies, which he said has restored confidence in the country’s energy infrastructure.

Mr. Ojulari also pointed to the enabling environment created by Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which has opened up new opportunities for investors in the oil and gas sector. He reiterated NNPC Ltd.’s readiness to collaborate and share knowledge with other African nations to help the continent unlock its full energy potential.
