INEC Pre-qualifies 14 Political Associations in Nigeria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 14 political associations have met the initial requirements to proceed to the next stage of registration as political parties in Nigeria. This decision was made following a review of applications from 171 groups.

According to a press statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Sam Olumekun, the associations were assessed on their compliance with provisions in Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act of 2022, and the commission’s own guidelines. Of the total applications, 157 were not deemed to have met the necessary criteria at this stage.

The announcement comes as part of INEC’s preparations for forthcoming off-cycle governorship elections and the end-of-tenure Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The commission has stated it will officially communicate its decision to all the associations within the next 24 hours. The list of the 14 pre-qualified groups has been published on INEC’s official website and other platforms for public information.
