Nigerian Government Rejects Accusations of Regional Bias in Project Allocation

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian federal government has issued a statement defending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration against what it calls “insinuations and fake information” regarding the distribution of projects and appointments. The government insists that its actions have been guided by principles of fairness and equity, with a focus on balanced development across all six geopolitical zones.

According to a press release from the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the administration has demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity. The statement highlighted major infrastructure projects currently underway in both the north and the south of the country. These include the Coastal Highway in the south and the Badagry–Sokoto Highway, which primarily traverses the north. The government also noted that it has secured funding for light rail projects in Kano and Kaduna states and is pushing for the rehabilitation of the Eastern Corridor rail line from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri.

The press release provided a breakdown of project distributions by region, citing verifiable data that positions the Northwest as the largest beneficiary with over ₦5.97 trillion (approximately $4 billion USD) in approvals, representing more than 40% of the total.

Other regional allocations were listed as:

  • South-South: ₦2.41 trillion
  • North-Central: ₦1.13 trillion
  • South-East: ₦407 billion
  • North-East: ₦400 billion
  • South-West (excluding Lagos): ₦604 billion

In addition to infrastructure, the government stated that federal appointments have been made based on competence and inclusivity, with no region being overlooked. It added that the establishment of five new Regional Development Commissions and the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development further illustrate the president’s commitment to addressing the country’s unique development needs.
