Nigeria, Brazil Strengthen Economic and Diplomatic Ties

Brasília, Brazil – Brazil and Nigeria have signed a series of agreements to boost cooperation in trade, diplomacy, and aviation, following a meeting between Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Bola Tinubu in Brasília. The discussions, held during President Tinubu’s state visit, highlighted the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two nations.

The leaders expressed satisfaction with the signing of a new Bilateral Air Services Agreement and its associated Memorandum of Understanding, which is expected to enhance connectivity, trade, and tourism. They also signed MoUs on political consultations, diplomatic training, and science and technology cooperation.

Both presidents emphasised the need to increase bilateral trade and investment, which they noted is currently below its potential. They welcomed the recent Brazil-Nigeria business forum as a crucial platform for deepening cooperation, noting concrete outcomes such as the export of Brazilian cattle to Nigeria for genetic improvement. The presidents instructed their respective authorities to expedite negotiations on sanitary and phytosanitary certificates to facilitate the expansion of bilateral trade.

Discussions also focused on agricultural cooperation, particularly through the “Green Imperative Program.” Brazil, a major buyer of Nigerian urea, is also exploring potential joint investments to strengthen fertilizer supply chains and enhance food security in both countries.

The leaders also addressed cooperation in security and intelligence. They welcomed the planned establishment of a Brazilian Federal Police Liaison Office in Abuja by the end of 2025 and committed to negotiating an agreement to combat human trafficking.

On the international stage, the presidents reiterated their shared commitment to reforming global institutions, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to give developing countries a more prominent voice. They called for a genuine reform of the World Trade Organization and expressed their commitment to the principles of multilateralism.

Both leaders also voiced support for the upcoming 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil in 2025 and supported the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) to provide financial resources for the conservation of tropical forests.
