Nairobi, Kenya – Thousands of demonstrators across Africa have rallied to protest Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, as the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave worsens. Rallies took place over the weekend in Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa, denouncing the conflict and calling for an end to the violence.
In Dakar, Senegal, protesters including lawmakers and rights activists marched through the capital, chanting slogans such as “No to genocide” and “Boycott Israel.” Some demonstrators called on their government to cut diplomatic ties with Israel, while others urged international leaders to push for a two-state solution.
In Nairobi, Kenya, hundreds joined a solidarity rally where bikers and motorists waved Palestinian flags and chanted “Free, free Palestine.” Protesters condemned the targeting of civilians and hospitals and warned that the military action amounts to a form of genocide.
Meanwhile, in South Africa, where the government has been one of Israel’s most vocal critics, demonstrators took to the streets to reinforce Pretoria’s legal position at the International Court of Justice, where it has accused Israel of genocide.
The protests follow a UN declaration that more than half a million people in Gaza, primarily children, are facing famine conditions, a crisis that has been exacerbated by Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 62,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023.
