Nigeria’s Electoral Commission Certifies New Lawmakers After Bye-Elections

Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially presented Certificates of Return (CoR) to seven newly elected federal lawmakers, concluding the electoral process for recent bye-elections held across the country. The certificates, which are the official documents validating an election victory, were awarded at a ceremony at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

The ceremony saw two senators and five members of the House of Representatives receive their certificates after winning polls held to fill vacant legislative seats in six states: Anambra, Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo.

The newly certified senators-elect are:

  • Nwachukwu Emmanuel Chibuzor, of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who won the Anambra South Senatorial District seat.
  • Ikpea Joseph Igiagbe, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the Edo Central Senatorial District.

For the House of Representatives, the five members-elect include:

  • Igbinedion Omosede Gabriella (APC) – Ovia North East/Ovia South West Federal Constituency, Edo State.
  • Mukhtar Rabiu Garki (APC) – Babura/Garki Federal Constituency, Jigawa State.
  • Joseph Fidelix Bagudu (APC) – Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Kaduna State.
  • Elegbeji Adesola Yetunde Ayoola (APC) – Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun State.
  • Oyekunle Fola Sunday (Peoples Democratic Party, PDP) – Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Oyo State.

INEC also announced that Certificates of Return for winners of the State Houses of Assembly bye-elections would be presented the following day by the respective Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at their state offices.

In a concluding statement, the commission reaffirmed its commitment to free and fair elections and urged the newly elected officials to be accountable to their constituents and prioritize public interest.
