Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian government has approved a new subsidy that will reduce the cost of kidney dialysis in federal hospitals by 76%, bringing immediate financial relief to thousands of patients across the country.
The new policy, approved by President Bola Tinubu, slashes the price of a single dialysis session from an average of ₦50,000 to a new subsidised rate of ₦12,000. The announcement was made in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala.
According to the statement, the new pricing is already in effect at ten major federal medical centres and teaching hospitals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The government plans to add more hospitals to the program by the end of the year to widen access nationwide.
The subsidy is the latest in a series of healthcare reforms by the Tinubu administration. Last year, the government also approved free cesarean sections for pregnant women in federal hospitals in a bid to boost maternal health and reduce preventable deaths.
