Abuja, Nigeria – Nearly 70,000 Nigerians have pre-registered to vote online in the first seven hours of a new voter registration drive, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a press release issued by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, a total of 69,376 people had signed up online by 3:30 pm on Monday. Of that figure, over 51% were female and nearly 70% were young people between the ages of 18 and 34.
The online portal, which went live at 8:30 am, is available 24 hours a day. INEC also announced that in-person registration will begin on August 25 at 811 state and local government offices across the country. Both options will run simultaneously.
INEC emphasized that voter registration is only open to Nigerian citizens aged 18 or older who have not previously registered. The commission also reminded the public that double or multiple registrations are illegal, though transfers of registration and replacement of lost or damaged voter cards are permitted.
