London, UK – A goalkeeping mistake by Manchester United’s Altay Bayindir allowed Arsenal to secure a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford in the opening match of the Premier League season.
In a surprise selection, United manager Ruben Amorim chose Bayindir over veteran Tom Heaton, as first-choice goalkeeper André Onana was sidelined with a hamstring injury. However, the decision proved costly in the 13th minute when Bayindir mishandled a corner from Declan Rice, pushing the ball directly to Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori, who scored from close range.
Despite the setback, United, who spent a reported £200 million on summer transfers, were the dominant side for much of the game, creating more chances and having more shots on target. But they were repeatedly thwarted by a series of impressive saves from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, who denied debutants Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
The win marks Arsenal’s fifth victory in their last six league meetings with Manchester United.
