Nigerian Electoral Body to Include SDP in Bye-Elections

Abuja, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced it will include candidates from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in bye-elections scheduled for Saturday, following a court order. The party was previously excluded after failing to submit a valid notice for its primaries.

In a press release signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC said it had been served with a judgement from the Federal High Court in Abuja, which directed the commission to include the SDP and its candidates. In compliance with the ruling, the SDP’s manually submitted list of candidates has been accepted and published on INEC’s website.

The commission reassured the public that the last-minute change would not affect the elections, which will proceed as scheduled in 12 states. INEC also stated that it would exercise its legal right to appeal the court’s judgement.
