Washington, D.C. – The United States government has approved a potential foreign military sale to Nigeria, which includes munitions and precision-guided bombs and rockets, valued at an estimated $346 million (£287 million).
The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed on Thursday that it had formally notified the US Congress of the possible sale. The package includes over a thousand 500-pound bombs, various computer control groups for precision weapons, and 5,000 advanced precision kill weapon system rockets.
According to the DSCA, the proposed sale is intended to bolster Nigeria’s ability to combat current and future threats, including operations against terrorist groups and illicit trafficking in the Gulf of Guinea. The agency stated that the deal would not alter the military balance in the region and would have no negative impact on US defence readiness. The principal contractors for the sale are RTX Missiles and Defence, Lockheed Martin Corporation, and BAE Systems.
