Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced its final preparations for a series of bye-elections scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 16, across 12 states. The elections will fill vacancies in two senatorial districts, five federal constituencies, and nine state constituencies.
In a press release signed by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC confirmed that all non-sensitive materials and electoral technology, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), have been prepared. The commission reminded political parties that all campaigns must end by midnight on Thursday.
The electoral body also announced that the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will resume on August 18 with an online pre-registration process. Physical registration will begin a week later at all 811 INEC offices across the country. The CVR is open to all Nigerian citizens who are 18 years or older and have not previously registered.
Additionally, INEC will publish the personal details of all candidates for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election on August 18. The public is being encouraged to scrutinise the documents, and any aspirant who believes a candidate has provided false information can challenge the nomination in court. The FCT Area Council election is scheduled for February 21, 2026.
