Harare, Zimbabwe – The government of Zimbabwe has banned the sale of second-hand clothes in all central business districts (CBDs) and prohibited all-night vending across the country. The new measures, which also include a ban on the importation of used clothing, took effect on Monday.
Speaking at a press conference, the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, stated that the bans are aimed at supporting formal businesses that pay taxes. He also linked night vending to the sale of illicit drugs, which he said poses a threat to public health and national security.
The minister instructed local authorities and law enforcement, particularly in the capital city of Harare, to immediately enforce the new directives.
