Ibom Air bans passenger after alleged crew assault

A passenger has been permanently banned from flying with Ibom Air after she was filmed assaulting a crew member on a flight from Uyo to Lagos, the airline has confirmed.

The incident, which happened on Sunday, reportedly began when the passenger, identified as Comfort Emmanson, refused to switch off her mobile phone before take-off, as per aviation safety rules. According to a statement from the airline, a fellow passenger eventually switched off the phone for her, which prompted a verbal confrontation.

Upon arrival in Lagos, Ibom Air stated that Ms. Emmanson confronted the flight’s Purser, physically assaulting her by slapping her, pulling off her wig, and throwing her glasses to the floor. The airline added that she also assaulted another crew member who attempted to intervene.

According to Ibom Air, Ms. Emmanson also tried to use a fire extinguisher as a weapon. She was later restrained by airport security personnel and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation. The airline has submitted a report on the incident to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for violent conduct.
