151 Associations Seek to Form New Political Parties
Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to resume its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise nationwide, beginning on August 18, 2025. The commission announced that the exercise will be held for one year and is introducing new tools to make the process more accessible to citizens.
The CVR will be conducted in two phases: an online pre-registration option begins on August 18, while in-person registration will follow a week later on August 25. Both processes will then run concurrently until the exercise concludes on August 30, 2026. Registration centres will be open from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at INEC’s 774 Local Government Area offices, 37 state offices, and the Federal Capital Territory office.
To help citizens easily locate a registration centre, INEC is deploying a CVR Live Locator, an online tool accessible on its website from August 17. The commission has also uploaded a 38-page document to its official online platforms, providing the addresses of all 811 in-person registration centres and has established dedicated telephone helplines for each state.
In a separate announcement, INEC stated it has received a total of 151 letters of intent from various associations seeking to be registered as political parties. The commission has begun shortlisting the associations that meet the legal requirements to proceed to the formal application stage. Details of the new applicants, including their proposed names and logos, have been made public on the INEC website. The commission plans to release further information on the party registration process after the conclusion of 16 bye-elections scheduled for August 16.
