ABUJA, NIGERIA – The European Union (EU) Delegation in Nigeria has refuted claims of “massive cuts” to its humanitarian assistance aimed at addressing food insecurity in the country. This comes in response to a press release issued by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on July 25, which had mentioned alleged reductions by the EU and other international donors.
In a statement released on Monday, July 28, 2025, the EU Delegation clarified that the level of its humanitarian support, provided by the EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Office (ECHO) in Nigeria during the first half of 2025, has been “similar” to that of the first half of 2024. The EU also stated its intention to increase this amount with “additional top-ups,” consistent with previous years. A significant portion of ECHO’s assistance in Nigeria continues to focus on emergency nutrition, health, and food aid.
The EU Delegation noted that MSF has since published a revised version of its press release, which no longer includes the European Union when discussing “massive cuts” by international donors. While commending MSF’s work with malnourished children and mothers in Nigeria – a commitment witnessed by the EU Ambassador during a recent visit to Sokoto State – the Delegation emphasised the importance of communicating “verified and accurate information” on such critical matters.
The EU reiterated a call made by its Ambassador on July 22, during a joint press conference with Nigeria’s Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction and other humanitarian partners, for an urgent increase in resources from both domestic and international sources to address the emergency nutrition situation, particularly in North-West and North-East Nigeria.
The EU Delegation concluded by reaffirming its financial commitments and overall level of support within its partnership with Nigeria.
