ABUJA, NIGERIA – Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the conclusion of its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State, reporting a significant number of new registrants ahead of the upcoming off-cycle governorship election. The Commission also provided an update on the process for registering new political parties.
During its weekly meeting on Thursday, July 24, 2025, INEC received the final report on the CVR in Anambra State. The exercise, extended due to public appeals, recorded 168,187 new registrants, the highest number for a two-week period in Anambra since the introduction of CVR in 2017. Preliminary figures indicate that 97,832 (58%) of the new registrants are female, while 70,355 (42%) are male. In terms of age, 90,763 (53.97%) are young people aged 18-34. The occupational breakdown shows 62,157 (36.92%) are businesspeople and 44,243 (26.31%) are students. Among Persons with Disability (PWDs), 303 (24.92%) have physical impediments, and 207 (17.02%) have albinism.
The next step involves displaying the preliminary register of new voters for claims and objections in all 326 Wards in Anambra State from Saturday, July 26, to Friday, August 1, 2025. Following this, and the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) process, new registrants will be added to the existing register and published by Polling Unit. INEC has assured new registrants that their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) will be available for collection before the election, despite tight timelines.
Regarding party registration, INEC stated that its newly developed in-house portal has been approved for deployment. The Commission is currently evaluating 144 letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties, with 10 new letters received recently. A report on which associations meet the requirements to proceed to the application stage is expected at the next regular meeting.
