Defence Chief Hails Lagos Food Security Programme as Model for National Stability

LAGOS, NIGERIA – Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has lauded the Lagos State Government’s new “Produce for Lagos” Programme and its associated ₦500 billion (approximately $330 million USD) Offtake Guarantee Fund, describing it as a “visionary initiative” crucial for national security. The programme aims to strengthen food systems and economic resilience in the country’s most populous state.

Speaking at the official unveiling of the programme on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, General Musa expressed admiration for the collaboration between Lagos State, the private sector, and the Lagos Food Systems Infrastructure Company (LAFSINCO). He noted that the initiative comes at a critical time when Nigeria urgently needs sustainable strategies to enhance food and economic security.

The CDS emphasised that food security is one of the most effective non-kinetic tools for preventing insecurity, poverty, and unemployment. He highlighted that Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) like LAFSINCO are establishing a replicable framework that not only boosts food production and logistics but also safeguards livelihoods across the country.

General Musa also praised Lagos State for its “consistent excellence in governance,” citing its economic growth, infrastructural development, and strategic urban planning as benchmarks for subnational leadership. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to supporting non-kinetic strategies that promote peace and stability.
