Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured their place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Tuesday, defeating rivals South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 2-1 in a tense semi-final clash. The hard-fought victory was sealed by a dramatic late goal, continuing Nigeria’s strong performance in the continental tournament.

The match, played with high intensity, saw Nigeria take the lead just before half-time. Rasheedat Ajibade calmly converted a penalty in the 45th minute, giving the Super Falcons a 1-0 advantage. Earlier in the game, South Africa were forced into an early substitution in the 26th minute when striker Hildah Magaia left the field due to injury, replaced by Thubelihle Makhubela.

South Africa responded strongly in the second half, levelling the score in the 60th minute through a penalty converted by Linda Motlhalo. With the game seemingly headed for extra time, Nigeria found their winner deep into stoppage time, in the 90+4th minute, when Michelle Alozie struck after being set up by Esther Okoronkwo. This dramatic goal secured the Super Falcons’ place in the WAFCON final, underlining their continued dominance on the continental stage and putting them within reach of another title.
