West African Exams Council Denies Cancellation of 2025 Certificate Exam

LAGOS, NIGERIA – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has strongly refuted a widely circulated online statement claiming the cancellation of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). WAEC has dismissed the information as “false, misleading, and the handiwork of mischief-makers.”

The alleged statement, which gained traction across social media platforms on Saturday, July 19, 2025, asserted that Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC had jointly cancelled the entire 2025 WASSCE due to extensive exam malpractice, coordinated leaks of question papers, and unauthorised digital distribution of examination materials.

In a swift rebuttal issued on Sunday, July 20, 2025, and signed by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC categorically denied issuing such a notice and branded the report as spurious.

“The said examination has not been cancelled,” the statement partly read. “Though the source of the information cannot be ascertained, the Council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the Council to disrepute and causing confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination.”

WAEC confirmed that the marking of scripts for the 2025 WASSCE has just concluded and assured the public that results would be released by Thursday, August 4, 2025.

The Council stressed that all its official announcements are made exclusively through its verified social media platforms, accredited national media outlets, and its Public Affairs Department. It urged all stakeholders and the general public to disregard the misleading publication.
