ABUJA, NIGERIA – Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced the recovery of 35 stolen vehicles across the country in the first half of 2025, a feat attributed to its tech-enabled vehicle tracking initiative.
According to a statement released on Friday, July 18, 2025, by FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, the recoveries were made possible by leveraging the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) portal. This data-driven platform is designed to provide intelligence for operations aimed at curbing vehicle-related crimes.
The recovered vehicles include 24 Toyota, five Lexus, two Mercedes, one Ford Focus, one Daihatsu, one Pontiac Vibe, and one Toyota Sienna. The FRSC stated that these vehicles were stolen through various means, including “armed robbery, abduction, and fraudulent tricking operations.” The Corps collaborated closely with other security agencies and state governments to trace and retrieve the vehicles from different parts of the country.
Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, expressed satisfaction with the officers’ performance, describing the recoveries as “a testament to the effectiveness of inter-agency synergy and technological integration in modern law enforcement.” He reiterated the FRSC’s expanded role in national security, emphasizing its commitment to “vehicle verification and traceability” beyond its primary road safety mandate.
Mohammed further characterised the recoveries as “a positive reflection of FRSC’s silent but consistent war against criminal elements who try to undermine public safety using stolen vehicles.”
The FRSC has urged the public to verify vehicle information before purchase and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities, encouraging continued partnership and trust in the Corps’ operational integrity and data-based enforcement strategies. Vehicle owners can verify number plate registrations via the FRSC mobile application or its official website.
