GOMBE, NIGERIA – The newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Gombe State, Sa’ad Idris, has begun a series of courtesy visits to key stakeholders, commencing with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES). The engagements signal a focus on bolstering security collaboration in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.
During a visit to the Commissioner of Police and Co-Chair of ICCES, Bello Yahaya, Mr. Idris underscored the critical role of security agencies in ensuring credible elections, stating, “As the 2027 General Elections approach, we will rely on your support and cooperation to deliver on our mandate.” The REC also offered to personally lead training for security personnel on election duties.
Mr. Idris briefed the Police Commissioner on the forthcoming Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which is scheduled to begin with online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, followed by in-person registration from August 25 at the State Office and all 11 Local Government Area offices in Gombe State. He urged the support of all security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police as the lead agency, for a smooth and secure CVR exercise. He also encouraged security personnel to update their voter registration details, noting that if ongoing constitutional and electoral act reviews are successful, those involved in election duties may gain the opportunity to vote.
Mr. Yahaya assured the REC of the Gombe State Police Command’s full support and welcomed the offer of training collaboration. Dr. Idris also paid visits to the Commander of the Nigerian Army 301 Artillery Regiment and the Gombe State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), both of whom pledged their full support for INEC’s electoral activities in the state.
