ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian government has issued a flood alert for 38 locations across 11 states, warning that heavy rainfall expected from Wednesday, July 16, to Sunday, July 20, 2025, could trigger significant flooding.
The alert, issued by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment, highlights a heightened risk of inundation in various parts of the country. States identified as potentially affected include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Borno, Bauchi, Plateau, Yobe, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Cross River, and Zamfara. Specific towns and areas within these states have been listed in the advisory.
This warning follows recent government efforts to bolster Nigeria’s flood preparedness. In June, the Federal Ministry of Environment initiated the development of a National Flood Insurance Policy, aiming to transition from a reactive to a more proactive and sustainable approach to flood risk management. During a technical committee meeting in Abuja, Permanent Secretary Mahmud Kambari described the increasing flood incidents across the country as a “national emergency” driven by climate change, urbanization, and inadequate infrastructure.
The proposed insurance scheme is intended to provide a financial safety net and reduce government expenditure on emergency relief.
