ABUJA, Nigeria – Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for Nigeria’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general election, has announced his resignation from the party. The move comes in the lead-up to the 2027 general election, with Mr. Abubakar confirming the formation of a new political entity, the Alliance Democratic Congress.
Mr. Abubakar’s resignation was communicated in a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of Jada 1 ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State. A copy of the letter was shared on social media platform X on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Abdul Rasheeth.
In the letter, Mr. Abubakar expressed his “profound gratitude for the opportunities” given to him by the PDP, including serving two terms as Vice President and being a presidential candidate twice. However, he stated that despite being a founding member, he found it “necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.” He cited “irreconcilable differences” that he believes are limiting the party’s chances in the forthcoming election.
The resignation follows earlier denials from Mr. Abubakar’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, who had dismissed rumours of his defection as “falsehoods and a politically motivated smear campaign,” asserting that the former Vice President remained a “committed, genuine, and loyal member” of the PDP.
