MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA – Two boys, abducted by Boko Haram four years ago, have been reunited with their families in Borno State, northeast Nigeria, after managing to escape their captors.

The Borno State Police Command announced on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, that Ayuba Ishaku and Yakubu Haruna, both approximately 13 years old, arrived at the ITE Divisional Police Headquarters in Maiduguri on July 12, having fled their captivity.

According to police spokesperson ASP Nahum Daso, the boys were abducted along with other women and children during an attack on Mandaragrau village in Biu Local Government Area in December 2019. They were subsequently held in Mangari, Tumbun Mota area of Baga in Kukawa Local Government Area. While in captivity, the minors reported serving as domestic aides and receiving training on firearm servicing.

Their escape on the night of July 8, 2025, occurred when most of the terrorists had left their camp for an operation, allowing the boys to navigate through dense bush to reach nearby communities and eventually Maiduguri. Upon their arrival, the police provided care and protection and subsequently located their families for a successful reunion.
