Ex-President Buhari’s Body to Arrive Nigeria Tuesday for Burial

The body of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday, is expected to arrive in Katsina on Tuesday for his final interment in his hometown of Daura.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed on Monday that President Bola Tinubu will personally receive the remains in Katsina. The repatriation of the former president’s body is being facilitated by a high-level Federal Government delegation, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, currently in London.

Upon arrival in Katsina, a brief military ceremony is planned at the airport before the body is transported to Daura. A funeral prayer (Jana’iza) will then be held, followed by interment at the late President’s residence.

In a move to facilitate national mourning, President Tinubu has directed that condolence registers be opened across all Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies, as well as at Nigerian embassies and missions abroad. Another register will be available at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.

Global leaders have continued to send their condolences, which Minister Idris described as a “testament to the global stature and legacy of President Muhammadu Buhari.” To ensure a “dignified and well-coordinated programme,” an Inter-Ministerial Committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has been established to work alongside the Katsina State Government and the Buhari family. Additionally, 25 members of the Federal Executive Council have been directed to attend the burial rites in Katsina and remain in Daura for the Third-Day prayers scheduled for Wednesday.
