Abuja, Nigeria – Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82. His family announced he passed away this afternoon in a clinic in London.
The news was confirmed in a statement signed by Garba Shehu, a long-time spokesperson for the former president. The statement read, “INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIRRAJIUUN. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Buhari, a former military head of state, was democratically elected president in 2015, marking the first time an incumbent president had been defeated in Nigeria’s history. He served two terms, focusing on anti-corruption, improving security, and revitalizing the economy. He handed over power in May 2023.
