Troops Arrest Suspected Gunrunners and Recover Weapons in Kaduna

Kaduna, Nigeria – Nigerian troops have apprehended three suspected gunrunners and recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition in Kaduna State. The arrests, made by soldiers of the 37 Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Demonstration Battalion on Thursday, July 10, 2025, are a result of intelligence-led operations aimed at curbing the proliferation of arms and terrorist activities.

The suspects, identified as Yakubu Jibril (45), Abubakar Yahaya (45), and Isiya Sani (30), were intercepted while traveling in a black Golf 4 vehicle with Registration Number ABUJA 385 K7 along the Kauya–Old Afaka–Sabon Birni Road in Igabi Local Government Area of the state.

A thorough search of the vehicle revealed nine AK-47 rifles, 389 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) live ammunition, 54 rounds of 5.56 x 45mm (NATO) ammunition, and 17 rifle magazines. Other items seized included GSM handsets, incriminating items, and a cash sum of N365,600 (approximately £190).

According to a press release signed by Major General Markus Kangye, Director Defence Media Operations, the operation highlights the effectiveness of the Nigerian Armed Forces in combating insurgency and criminal activities. The suspects are currently in custody, undergoing interrogation and investigation to dismantle the entire network involved in illicit arms trafficking.

The Chief of Defence Staff has commended the troops and reassured the public of ongoing security operations with heightened vigilance, emphasizing the military’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the populace.
