Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reported a significant increase in the number of associations seeking to register as political parties, as the country gears up for its next election cycle. In an update released today, INEC announced it has received seven new applications for party registration in the past week alone, bringing the total number of prospective parties to 129. All applications are currently undergoing processing. The surge highlights the dynamic political landscape in Africa’s most populous nation, where numerous parties often vie for power at national and regional levels. In a bid to streamline and expedite the registration process, INEC is moving away from its traditional manual system. The commission is set to introduce a new online “political party registration portal,” which will be integrated into its existing Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System (PFRAS).”This will make the process faster and seamless,” stated Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information & Voter Education Committee, in the press release.
INEC expects to conclude final testing of the new portal within the next week. Following its deployment, the commission plans to announce the next steps for associations that meet the initial requirements, along with guidelines for submitting applications through the PFRAS. The list of the latest associations seeking registration has been made public on INEC’s official website and other platforms for transparency. This development comes as Nigeria continues to refine its electoral processes, aiming for greater efficiency and accountability in its democratic exercises.
