Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian government is calling for increased stakeholder engagement to tackle the pervasive issue of climate change for sustainable national development. This appeal came from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) during a recent courtesy visit in Abuja by a delegation from the African Centre for Climate Actions and Rural Development Initiative (ACCARD), accompanied by the African Climate Foundation (ACF).
In a press release issued on July 9, 2025, by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information & Public Relations at the Office of the SGF, the SGF highlighted that human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and changes in land use like deforestation, are major drivers of climate change. These activities, he noted, contribute to desertification, often forcing herders to migrate and leading to conflicts with farmers over resources.
The SGF stressed the need for sustained advocacy and sensitisation campaigns among key stakeholders to educate communities on the dangers of climate change, aiming to encourage behavioural changes for sustainable development. He assured the delegation of the government’s commitment to providing the necessary policy framework to address climate challenges.
Freeman Elohor Oluowo, Founder and Centre Coordinator of ACCARD, expressed his organisation’s desire to collaborate with the Federal Government. He stated that ACCARD, working with the World Bank and the African Climate Foundation, seeks to provide the policy framework needed to drive climate initiatives. Oluowo emphasised that sustainable land use is crucial for resolving conflicts between herders and farmers, and that through stakeholder engagement and appropriate policies, Nigeria can achieve desired results in climate action.
