Abuja, Nigeria – Public health officials from across West Africa have completed a specialized training program in Nigeria, aimed at strengthening the region’s ability to respond to health emergencies. The initiative is part of ongoing support from the United States government for global health security.

The first cohort of the Regional Public Health Emergency Management Training graduated today in Abuja. The two-week intermediate-level course was hosted by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC) in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

Seventeen public health emergency operations centre staff members participated, drawn from Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Liberia, and Mali. They focused on enhancing their skills in effectively managing incident response systems for outbreak preparedness. This training means the region is now better equipped to prepare for and respond to epidemics and pandemics.

During the graduation ceremony, Asmau Aminu-Alhaji, Acting Program Director for the U.S. CDC Division of Global Health Protection, commended the graduates for their commitment to public health. She also stressed the crucial role of cross-border collaboration and communication in public health efforts.

This Public Health Emergency Management Professional Certification Program is a component of the U.S. Government’s broader support for global health security initiatives, providing essential training in emergency operations and critical preparedness skills for public health experts.
