Gondomar, Portugal – Crowds gathered in the small town of Gondomar, on the outskirts of Porto, today to mourn Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, who both died in a car crash in Spain on Thursday.
Portugal’s president, stars from the national football team, and fans from across the country converged on the town where the brothers grew up, to pay their respects.
Before a public wake, Jota and Silva’s parents, grandfather, and other family members held a private vigil at a local chapel. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday.
The two brothers, both footballers – André played in Portugal’s second division – were killed when the Lamborghini they were travelling in crashed in the Spanish province of Zamora.
Mourners, many carrying Portuguese flags, flowers, and other memorabilia, were seen weeping as they queued to pay their respects. Among those in attendance were President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, national team stars João Moutinho, Diogo Dalot, and Ricardo Horta, as well as Jota’s agent, Jorge Mendes.
Jota played for the local club Gondomar SC as a young boy, which named its academy after him in 2022. The academy’s sign bears a quote from Jota: “It’s not about where we come from but where we’re going to.” Outside the club, shirts and scarves were laid within a ring of candles as a tribute.
