Abuja, Nigeria – Peter Rufai, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper and a key member of Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning squad, has died. He was 61.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed Rufai’s passing in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday.

“Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana,” the tribute read. “We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion. Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”

Fondly known as “Dodo Mayana” by fans, Rufai earned 65 caps for the national team. He was part of Nigeria’s “golden generation” that secured the country’s second AFCON title in Tunisia in 1994. He also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup tournaments in 1994 and 1998
