Nigeria: Students Warned Over Fake Education Loan Portal

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has issued a public alert, warning students to be wary of a fraudulent online portal disseminating misleading information about student loan applications. The warning comes as fake messages directing users to an unofficial website have begun circulating.

In a statement released in Abuja on Monday, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, categorically stated that the information being spread is false.

“The attention of NELFUND has been drawn to a fraudulent message currently circulating online, falsely claiming that President Bola Tinubu has directed the reopening of the NELFUND Student Loan portal,” Mrs. Oluwatuyi said. She highlighted that the misleading messages include a link to a fake website: https://nelfund-student-loan-2025.po-rt-al.com/NELFUND/.

NELFUND has confirmed that this website is fake, and the claims contained within the messages are false and misleading. The agency reiterated that the only official portal for the NELFUND Student Loan Application is https://nelf.gov.ng.

The fund urged the general public, especially students, parents, and guardians, to exercise extreme caution. They advised against clicking on unverified links and strongly cautioned against submitting any personal or financial information on suspicious websites.

Mrs. Oluwatuyi emphasized NELFUND’s commitment to transparency, safety, and fairness throughout the loan application process, assuring that all official announcements would be made solely through its verified platforms. Students are encouraged to report any suspicious messages or websites via email at info@nelf.gov.ng or through NELFUND’s official social media channels: X (formerly Twitter) at @nelfund, Instagram at @nelfund, and on Facebook and LinkedIn as ‘Nigerian Education Loan Fund – NELFUND’.
