Nigeria’s Ruling Party Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje Steps Down Amid Unclear Circumstances

Abuja, Nigeria – Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has reportedly resigned from his position, effective immediately. The unexpected development has sent ripples through the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, with an official announcement from the National Working Committee (NWC) anticipated soon.

As of Friday, details surrounding Ganduje’s departure remain unclear, though multiple sources within the party have confirmed the resignation. One unnamed source at the APC national headquarters, unauthorized to speak publicly, stated that the NWC would soon announce an acting chairman. Another reliable source, speaking exclusively to our correspondent, affirmed the resignation, noting that “most of his personal belongings have been moved from the APC national secretariat.”

The news was further amplified by Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, who posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, confirming Ganduje’s resignation from “multiple sources.” Ahmad added that one of the party’s national vice chairmen is expected to serve in an acting capacity until a substantive chairman is elected at the national convention, slated for December 2025.

When our correspondent visited the APC national headquarters in Abuja, clusters of party supporters were observed discussing the unfolding events, awaiting official confirmation from the NWC. Attempts to reach the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, for comment were unsuccessful.

Ganduje, a former Governor of Kano State, assumed the chairmanship of the APC in August 2023. His tenure has seen various internal party challenges and controversies.

This sudden leadership change comes at a critical time for the APC, as it navigates the political landscape ahead of future elections. All eyes will now be on the National Working Committee for its official statement and the announcement of an interim leader.
