Israel Strikes Tehran’s Evin Prison, Iran Says

Iran’s judiciary has reported that Israel has struck the notorious Evin prison in Tehran, causing damage to parts of the facility, which is known to hold many political prisoners.

The judiciary’s Mizan news agency stated that the situation at the prison was “under control” following the attack, which it described as a violation of international law. Footage broadcast on Iranian state television showed emergency services carrying a casualty on a stretcher and searching through the rubble of a flattened building.

Israel’s defence minister confirmed that its forces had hit “regime targets and agencies of government repression” across Tehran, including the Evin prison.

France’s foreign minister described the strike on the prison as “unacceptable,” highlighting the danger posed to two French citizens who are currently detained there.

This development follows reports on Monday that the Israeli military had also struck access routes to the Fordo uranium enrichment plant, located south of Tehran. This came a day after US aircraft reportedly used “bunker-busting” bombs to attack the underground facility.

In retaliation, Iranian ballistic missiles struck various locations across Israel, including an industrial area in the coastal city of Ashdod, near a power station.

Israel initiated its air campaign against Iran ten days ago, stating its objective was to eliminate what it termed the “existential threats” posed by Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

According to Iran’s health ministry, Israeli strikes have resulted in the deaths of around 500 people. However, one human rights group has claimed the death toll is as high as 950. Israeli authorities have reported that Iranian missile strikes on Israeli cities have killed 24 people.
