Nigeria has taken a significant step towards fostering innovation and entrepreneurship with the launch of an $11.2 million innovation hub in Abuja. The project, backed by a grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to provide vital infrastructure and support for startups, serving as a centre for creativity, research, and technological development.
The hub is part of a larger initiative to strengthen Nigeria’s innovation and technology ecosystem, with a focus on industrialization and digitization. According to Kashifu Inuwa, Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the project will provide startups with access to a makerspace, seed funding, and mentorship, enabling them to turn their ideas into products and services.
“It’s about building the entire ecosystem; we are not just training startups, we are also giving them the tools, the environment, and the financing they need to thrive,” Inuwa said.
The project is expected to have a significant impact on Nigeria’s economy, nurturing homegrown talent and promoting entrepreneurship. The innovation hub will serve as a critical bridge between training and commercialization, offering a conducive environment for startups to ideate, experiment, and scale their businesses.
