Ahmedabad, India – A single survivor has been identified from the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed the lives of at least 200 people on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The survivor, a British national named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, was in seat 11A on the London-bound Boeing 787-8 flight, according to Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik.
The flight manifest, shared by Indian authorities, confirmed Mr. Ramesh’s details. Indian media outlets reported speaking to Mr. Ramesh in hospital, where he was quoted as saying: “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly.” He reportedly presented his boarding pass as verification.
Commissioner Malik confirmed to the ANI news agency that the survivor “has been in the hospital and is under treatment.”
Air India stated that the flight, destined for Gatwick Airport, was carrying 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. The aircraft crashed into accommodation used by doctors less than a minute after taking off from Ahmedabad.
In the United Kingdom, King Charles and Queen Camilla issued a statement expressing their profound shock. “Our special prayers and deepest possible sympathy are with the families and friends of all those affected by this appallingly tragic incident across so many nations, as they await news of their loved ones,” the statement read.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has organised crisis teams in both India and the UK to respond to the disaster. He informed the House of Commons: “We know that British nationals were on board and I can confirm that the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) is working urgently with local authorities to support British nationals and their families, and has stood up a crisis team in both Delhi and in London.”
