New Electoral Chief Takes Helm in Gombe Amid Focus on Integrity

Gombe, Nigeria – A new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) has taken charge of Nigeria’s electoral body (INEC) in Gombe State, signalling a focus on professionalism and seamless operations as the nation prepares for future elections. Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris officially assumed leadership from his predecessor, Alh. Ibrahim Umar, in a handover ceremony on Tuesday.

The transition comes as INEC, Nigeria’s independent electoral commission, continually seeks to enhance its processes and maintain public confidence in the electoral system.

Addressing staff, Dr. Idris underscored the critical importance of integrity and transparency in their duties, urging them to uphold the “foundation of the Commission’s mandate.” He called for “professionalism, excellence, dedication, and teamwork,” indicating his commitment to fostering a collaborative environment within the Gombe INEC office, which oversees eleven Local Government Areas.

Outgoing REC Ibrahim Umar acknowledged some of the practical challenges faced during his tenure, including structural damage to several LGA offices caused by seasonal winds. However, he expressed confidence in the new REC’s ability to navigate the state’s electoral landscape and assured a smooth transition.

The formal handover included the signing of comprehensive notes detailing the office’s operations and assets. Following the ceremony, both the outgoing and incoming RECs jointly inspected key facilities, including the official residence and the INEC Gombe Zonal Store, to ensure a thorough familiarisation for Dr. Idris.

Dr. Idris immediately convened meetings with management and general staff to outline immediate priorities and promote an inclusive work environment. A meeting with all Electoral Officers is scheduled for next week, highlighting the new REC’s swift move to engage with operational teams across the state.

The seamless transition in Gombe is part of INEC’s broader efforts to strengthen its institutional capacity and ensure credible electoral processes across Nigeria.
