New Digital Portal Launched to Combat Counterfeit Products Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has inaugurated a joint inter-agency committee to develop a new Digital Traceability Portal. The initiative aims to enhance product integrity, combat counterfeit goods, and improve supply chain transparency across the country.

The proposed portal, a flagship project of the FCCPC, will assign unique QR codes to products. This system is designed to allow consumers, retailers, manufacturers, and regulators to easily verify a product’s authenticity, track its origin, and ensure end-to-end traceability within the supply chain.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Kola Alabi, Executive Commissioner for Corporate Services at the FCCPC, emphasised the collaborative nature of the initiative. “Our goal is to deliver a solution that reduces counterfeiting and addresses other challenges within the supply chain,” he stated.

The newly formed Joint Inter-Agency Committee comprises representatives from key national institutions, including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigeria Police Force, the National Orientation Agency (NOA), and the Anti-Counterfeiting Collaboration (ACC).

This initiative aligns with the FCCPC’s mandate under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which tasks the commission with promoting fair market practices, protecting consumers from deceptive trade, and coordinating cross-agency efforts against threats to consumer safety.

The FCCPC anticipates that the Digital Traceability Portal will introduce a new era of digital accountability in Nigeria’s product markets, effectively combatting fake goods and building consumer trust through real-time authentication and improved supply chain visibility.
