Nigeria: Diaspora Commission Backs Man O’ War’s New Engagement Strategy

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has announced its support for a new Diaspora Engagement Strategy launched by Man O’ War Nigeria, a paramilitary organisation, aiming to bolster Nigeria’s global image and strengthen ties with its extensive diaspora communities.

The press release announcing this development was signed by Gabriel Odu, Media, Public Relations and Protocols for NiDCOM.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, stated that the partnership aligns with the Commission’s broader objective of positioning the Nigerian diaspora as a crucial asset for national development. Her remarks were delivered by Sule Bassi, Secretary to the Commission.

Mr. Bassi highlighted the vast potential for engagement, noting that over 20 million Nigerians reside abroad, comprising 18 million in the modern diaspora and 2 million in the historic African diaspora. “The diaspora is not just a demographic, but a formidable resource pool that contributes to critical sectors including health, ICT, culture, sports and investment,” he said.

NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to partnerships that enhance diaspora relations, referencing ongoing initiatives such as the National Diaspora Policy, the Diaspora Data Mapping Portal, the Nigerian Diaspora Investment Summit, and the Nigerian Diaspora Mortgage Scheme. Mr. Bassi described the Man O’ War initiative as both timely and commendable, pledging NiDCOM’s readiness to support collaborations that promote unity, citizenship education, and national reorientation.

The National Commander of Man O’ War Nigeria, Gbenga Adedamola, outlined the organisation’s vision to counter misinformation and reshape narratives about Nigeria through direct engagement with Nigerians living abroad. He announced the establishment of a dedicated Diaspora Command within Man O’ War, tasked with educating diaspora communities on government initiatives, encouraging patriotic discourse, and promoting investment opportunities within Nigeria.

“We are focused on one-on-one engagement and constructive dialogue. Our mission is to foster renewed trust, civic responsibility, and national pride among Nigerians abroad,” Adedamola stated. He added that Man O’ War, established by an Act of Parliament, remains committed to leadership development and good citizenship, pledging continued support for the Federal Government’s nation-building efforts both at home and internationally.
