Nigeria Demands Probe into Death of Citizen in Luxembourg Police Custody

Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has announced it will collaborate with the Nigerian Embassy in Belgium to demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a Nigerian national, Daniel Eheri, in the custody of Luxembourg Police Grand-Ducale.

The Chairman of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, strongly condemned the allegation that the suspect died while being held by police authorities. A statement from the Commission’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, conveyed this stance.

Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa extended her condolences to the family of the deceased and the Nigerian Community in Luxembourg, pledging that NiDCOM would work with other stakeholders to ensure justice is served. She reiterated the Commission’s commitment to demanding a thorough investigation in conjunction with the Nigerian Embassy in Luxembourg.

The Nigerian Community in Luxembourg had reportedly sent a written petition to the Federal Government of Nigeria, calling for an urgent investigation into the alleged extrajudicial killing. The petition, titled “Case of an Extrajudicial Killing of a Nigerian by the Police Authority of Luxembourg,” was addressed to Abike Dabiri-Erewa and signed by the National Coordinator of the Nigerian Community in Luxembourg, Sunday Adekolu.

According to the petition, Mr. Eheri, a Nigerian with an “untainted record” and a residence permit holder in Luxembourg, was arrested by local police on February 10, 2025, while in possession of foodstuffs. He was reportedly confirmed dead the following day. The petition raised concerns over the lack of explanation from Luxembourg authorities regarding the circumstances of his death.

“To prevent a recurrence of such a dastardly act of inhumanity against our people here in Luxembourg, there must be transparency and justice in the handling of this case,” Mr. Adekolu stated in the petition. He also noted that Nigeria’s Ambassador to Belgium, Ambassador Obinna Chiedu Onowu, whose diplomatic coverage includes Luxembourg, had written two letters concerning the case but had received no official response.

Mr. Adekolu appealed for NiDCOM’s urgent assistance to clarify the facts, persuade the Luxembourg Police Grand-Ducale to conduct an autopsy on Mr. Eheri’s remains, and encourage measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
