Awka, Nigeria – Police in Nigeria’s Anambra State have announced the destruction of a local bomb-making facility and the neutralisation of various improvised explosive devices (IEDs) following a raid on a secessionist hideout.

The operation took place on Saturday, 24 May, in Isseke, Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.

A statement released on Sunday by the Anambra State Police Command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, described the hideout as “one of the last strongholds of the secessionist group” that had been considered impregnable for over two years, and which the group had used to launch attacks in the state.

Ikenga stated that a joint security team, comprising police, military personnel, and operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Service, carried out the clearance operation.

“During the operation, a local bomb factory was destroyed, while assorted locally made improvised explosive devices were recovered and demobilised,” the statement read.

According to the police, one of the IEDs buried near the camp exploded during the assault, causing damage to the road and serving as a barrier to prevent security forces from accessing the facility. No lives were lost during the operation.

Police further reported that security forces are maintaining operational security dominance in the area, with sustained efforts aimed at fully reclaiming it from the criminal elements.
